Management Committee Meeting of India Internship Development Council (IIDC) Held in Delhi

*Focus on the Role of Internships in Building a Developed India*

The India Internship Development Council (IIDC) held a pivotal management committee meeting today in New Delhi, bringing together leaders from educational institutions, corporate sectors, and government bodies to discuss the critical role of internships in shaping a developed India. The meeting focused on the council’s ongoing efforts to bridge the gap between academic learning and practical industry experience, a key component in driving India’s economic growth and empowering its youth.

During the meeting, Mr. Deven Khatri, Director General of IIDC, emphasized the council’s mission to connect educational institutions, young professionals, and companies through structured and financially supported internship programs. He highlighted the importance of creating a seamless transition from education to employment, which is essential for equipping India’s youth with the skills and experience necessary to contribute to the nation’s progress.

“Internships are not just a bridge between education and employment; they are a critical pathway to developing a skilled, adaptable, and future-ready workforce,” said Mr. Khatri. “The India Internship Development Council is committed to crafting careers by facilitating meaningful internships that provide real-world experience, financial support, and professional guidance.”

In line with the Union Budget 2024-25, presented by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, the government has earmarked Rs 19,000 crore to support the creation of 1 crore internships over the next five years. The first phase targets 30 lakh internships, providing substantial opportunities for young professionals across various sectors. This initiative is seen as a cornerstone in the government’s vision to transform India into a developed nation by 2047, with a particular focus on youth empowerment and skill development.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his budget address, emphasized that “the youth of today are the architects of tomorrow’s India,” underscoring the importance of internships in preparing them for future challenges. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman echoed this sentiment, stating that “this internship initiative is designed to empower the young workforce with practical experience and financial stability, ensuring they are ready to contribute meaningfully to the economy.”

Mr. Khatri outlined IIDC’s comprehensive approach to addressing the needs of all stakeholders involved. He discussed how the council’s initiatives align with the government’s vision by facilitating internships across 500 top companies, ensuring that interns not only gain experience but also receive financial support, including a monthly stipend of Rs 5,000 and a one-time assistance of Rs 6,000 to cover initial expenses.

“The government’s commitment to fostering internship programs is a testament to the recognition of their importance in nation-building,” Mr. Khatri added. “IIDC’s role is to ensure that these opportunities are accessible, equitable, and beneficial for all—students, educational institutions, and companies alike.”

The meeting also featured discussions on IIDC’s pan-India operations and how the council’s initiatives are tailored to meet the diverse needs of different regions. IIDC continues to collaborate with top-tier companies and educational institutions to ensure that the internship programs are aligned with industry standards and expectations.

The management committee concluded with a call to action for all stakeholders to actively participate in and support IIDC’s mission. The council is set to roll out several new initiatives in the coming months, further solidifying its role as a key player in shaping the future workforce of India.
